Giessen

Definition
In switzerland, the term "Giessen" refers to waterfalls, which all share similar properties. They occur due to a combination of hard and softer rocks and stone. Soft marl or sandstone is being rinsed out by the water over time. This all while the top layer isn't as easy to remove and thus sort of a hollow gets created. [1][2] There are especially many "Giessen" in the töss valley.[3]
The word "Giessen" most likely come from the old high german word "giezo", which means, floating water or waterfall. [4] However, it is also possible that the word "Giessen" is derived from the word "güse" which means pouring in english.[5]
"Giessen" also refers to a small peninsula in wädenswil[6]. Interestingly, this small minicipality also has a waterfall, that looks like it is a "Giessen". [7]
